I am especially interested in human dignity and how this value is produced and lived in everyday life, both digitally and offline.
My main area of study is children and young people’s digital media use and how it impacts their wellbeing; as well as exposure to online risks, such as cyberbullying. I am especially interested in human dignity and how this value is produced and lived in everyday life, both digitally and offline. I’ve regularly engaged in online safety-related policy consultations, and have provided expert evidence in front of Irish parliamentary committees. I’ve published over 20 academic articles in interdisciplinary journals such as New Media & Society, Social Media & Society and International Journal of Communication, among others, and I am also the author of “Protecting Children Online: Cyberbullying Policies of Social Media Companies” (MIT Press, 2018). I am currently a member of the Pool of European Youth Researchers, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and European Commission in the area of youth work. I’ve been a member of the EU Kids Online research network and have coordinated data collection for the EU Kids Online project in Serbia (nationally-representative survey on children’s digital media use) and is currently involved in preparing the next round of data collection with the network. I am currently preparing a qualitative study on adolescent GenAI use in Ireland, with Dr. Claudette Pretorius. Previously, I was a Marie Skłodowska Curie scholar (Elite-S COFUND with Anti-Bullying Centre (ABC) and ADAPT SFI at DCU); and the PI on a Facebook-funded project “Co-designing with Children: A Rights-based approach to fighting Cyberbullying” and her previous work examined the effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI)-based interventions on social media from children’s perspective. At ABC, I also led the Irish data collection for “Kids Digital Lives in Covid-19 Times (KiDiCoTi),” an international project coordinated by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC). The project in Ireland included a survey on a national sample of children aged 10-18 about their digital media use and online risks during the Covid-19 lockdown. On behalf of ABC, I have testified about children’s digital media use and online safety in front of the Irish Parliamentary Committees (Oireachtas) three times since 2019, and have given numerous media interviews to the Irish and international media.
