research inspiration
I believe that well designed technology can have a positive impact on society and that technology works best when it augments rather then replaces human capabilities. Achieving the potential of technology for good requires a human-centred approach. My work seeks to bridge disciplinary boundaries and develop technologies that address key societal challenges, such as improving access to mental health services.
I am an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science. My research focuses on human computer interaction, with an emphasis on health technologies, and digital mental health in particular. From 2016 to 2021 I led TEAM and EU doctoral training network focusing on technology enabled mental health for young people. My work has investigated online help-seeking, game and mobile-based support for young people, and online therapies for adults experiencing anxiety and depression. Prior to joining UCD I was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol (2012-15) and a Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge (2009-11).
